Chronology
The film follows a singer who dies suddenly while on tour in Japan, but her spirit survives and she embarks on a journey to find humanity in the afterlife. The film’s Singapore premiere, which is also a Southeast Asian premiere, will be presented in conjunction with the 40th edition of the vOilah!
Spirit World is a multi-layered film that, at its core, deals with two very human impulses
On the one hand, the creative instinct that drives artists and, on the other, the emotional need for family connections. At the very beginning of the film, we are introduced to three characters who have lost touch with both impulses as defined.
This is of course a very idealized perspective on that universal question: what happens after we die?
Singer-songwriter Claire (Deneuve), Yuzo (Sakai) – a former songwriter turned piano tuner – and his son Hayato (Takenouchi), an anime director whose best acclaimed work now seems behind him. For these three characters, decisions and actions must be made in death and the afterlife to find a solution to life’s unresolved problems.
Spirit World answers this question in a very realistic and pragmatic way
Putting aside the fear of the unknown and making the choice to help the living, a selfless quest that, for our protagonists, results in the realization of their humble desires. This is the message of Spirit World: the creative impulse can bear fruit in healing family ties, when exercised with selfless intention.
From a technical standpoint, Spirit World ticks all the boxes of audience engagement
The sympathetic performances draw you in, the beautiful landscapes (and seascapes) by Takasaki and Chiba are a pure feast for the eyes, and a tribute is paid to the musical artists of the 60s and 70s, a golden age of creativity that may never be seen again. A sweet and heartfelt cinematic experience for anyone who has felt the pull of creativity and the love of family.
